If you have trouble seeing well enough to read, cook, or recognize the faces of people you know … even with your glasses on … you may have low vision. Low vision makes everyday tasks a challenge despite the use of ordinary glasses, contact lenses, medicine, or surgery to improve eyesight. People with low vision often have other related health problems such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, or diabetes. Low Vision Rehabilitation does not cure the cause of vision loss, but instead provides training to utilize the remaining vision to its fullest potential. Our Low Vision Occupational Therapists equip patients with the knowledge, skills, adaptive techniques, and assistive devices needed to achieve success with the visual tasks essential to performing activities of daily living. Carefully selected assistive devices are sold and individualized training on how to use them effectively provides each patient the opportunity to maximize their independence and enjoy life. Low Vision Rehabilitation at PVHMC is a specialized Occupational Therapy program. Treatment takes place on an outpatient basis and begins with a referral from the doctor. Low vision evaluations and therapy sessions by an Occupational Therapist are covered by Medicare.
