In addition to professional textbooks and journals, the library's collection includes many resources specifically written for people who are not medically trained. The collection includes approximately 850 books and 175 periodicals - most kept as far back as 1987. The library also provides access to the major healthcare databases, including PubMed, CINAHL and others and assistance in using them. Through the generosity of the PVHMC Auxiliary, a special collection of resources for families and others who care for children with special healthcare needs has recently been established. The Children with Special Healthcare Needs Collection includes books in both English and Spanish that are specifically written for the children themselves, as well as others written for parents, caregivers and siblings. For patrons affiliated with PVHMC (Associates, physicians and volunteers), all library services are free of charge, and items may be checked out for two weeks. Other patrons may use any of the resources on-site, may make photocopies for a small charge, and may check out the books from the Children with Special Healthcare Needs Collection. A qualified Medical Librarian provides library assistance, as well as the full range of reference services. The librarian is also available to assist with Internet searches as needed. The Medical Library is located on the east side of the hospital, across from the Emergency Department. The Library is usually open Monday through Thursday 8:30am to 4:00 pm, and Friday from 8:00am to noon. Visitors are advised to call ahead.
