PERIOPERATIVE SERVICES
PVHMC provides services and support for patients requiring inpatient or outpatient surgical interventions. We are proud to provide a comprehensive approach to the education, preparation, and care of our surgical patients and their families. A typical surgical journey begins with your physician’s referral and a visit to our pre-admission unit for surgery (PAUS). A registered nurse and a skilled technician will answer your questions and begin preliminary preparation for surgery. Any necessary lab work will be done at this time to facilitate a smooth and comfortable experience the day of your surgery. Information on how to prepare and what to expect will be provided to you. For our pediatric patients, we provide a tour for both the parent and child. Appropriate developmental teaching will be provided before and after surgery. On the day of surgery, you will arrive at the pre-operative unit. Our experienced staff will prepare you for surgery with personalized care and transport you to the holding room. Our surgical team, which will include one of our board certified anesthesiologists, a registered nurse and a surgical scrub technician will interview you and answer any questions. Once in the surgical suite, your surgery will begin.

Robotic Surgery
PVHMC has joined 323 other hospitals around the world in offering state-of-the-art robotic surgery with the use of the da Vinci Surgical System by Intuitive Surgical. During robotic surgery, surgeons operate four robotic arms via the console, which allows them to use miniature EndoWrist surgical instruments in the 1-centimeter incisions made in the patient. The da Vinci control console allows the surgeon to see the surgical field in enhanced detail as a result of the three-dimensional (3-D) images transmitted from the laparoscopic cameras. The surgeon manipulates the robotic “hands” in real-time using master controls. The instruments are designed with seven degrees of motion that mimic and in some instances expand upon the dexterity of the human wrist. Because small incisions are used instead of more traditional, larger incisions, patients can experience a faster recovery time from surgery, as well as a lowered risk of infection or other complications and the possibility of better outcomes. Robotic surgery is currently available for prostatectomies and cardiac surgeries, and will be available for other general surgeries in the near future.

The latest in state-of-the-art equipment is available, including our new NEURO-NAVIGATION system for brain and spinal tumors. When your surgery is complete, our volunteer staff will update your family. Afterwards, the staff in our post-operative units will meet your needs while efficiently preparing you for a safe discharge home. Every step of the way, our highly trained and supportive staff members are there with you so that your surgical experience will be pleasant and positive.
