There are many different types and sponsors of clinical trials/research. The National Cancer Institute sponsors some; academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, major hospital, private physicians and cooperative groups sponsor others. They all play an important role in diversifying the range of oncology clinical research, as well as increasing access to trials at a community level.

Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) is an example of one of a number of major cooperative groups that conduct research projects for the National Cancer Institute. Many institutions are involved in researching unique treatments for the prevention and/or cure of cancer as well as measuring the impact of new treatments on the quality of life of the cancer patient. Cooperative groups are nationally based organizations, but usually have local partnerships with major research institutions in metropolitan areas.

Cooperative groups may address a number of different types of cancer, or they may focus on new treatment and/or therapy design protocols. Access to cooperative group clinical research allows patients to be proactive and informed about their cancer treatment options.

Insurance companies often cover the costs of the chemotherapy and/or radiation, as these treatments are often already FDA approved and considered the standard of care for cancer treatment (however, some exceptions may apply). In the case of investigational agents, or brand new treatments that have not been approved by the FDA, the group sponsoring the study normally provides them at no cost to the patient.

Clinical trials strive to answer important scientific questions and suggest future research directions. Because of progress made through clinical trials, many people treated for cancer are now living longer.
